Short-handed Dallas edges Houston for first win

05/05/2010 - Houston, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ugo Ihemelu scored in the 79th minute and Kevin Hartman posted his first shutout of the season, as 10-man FC Dallas edged the Houston Dynamo 1-0 on Saturday for its first win of the season.

Dallas (1-1-4) was winless through five matches, including a 1-1 draw at Pizza Hut Park against Houston on opening day, but posted its first-ever victory at Houston's Robertson Stadium in 10 all-time meetings.

Houston (3-3-1) lost for the first time at home this season, and was shut out for the third time in its last five games.

Daniel Hernandez and Atiba Harris had Dallas' only shots on goal in the first half, but Pat Onstad stopped both long-range efforts. Hartman had even less to do through 45 minutes, saving Houston's lone shot on goal by Dominic Oduro.

Houston created its best chance of the second half in the 65th, but FC Dallas defender Heath Pearce slid in to deflect a shot from Brad Davis in front of an empty net.

Dallas went down a man in the 73rd after Jair Benitez was sent off for running into Houston's Luis Landin, but Ihemelu responded with the unexpected winner.

Dax McCarty drove a free kick from the right to the left post, where Brek Shea directed the ball through the six-yard area to the right post. Ihemelu jumped over Landin just steps off the line, and headed home his first of the season.

Davis had another good chance in the 87th but, after substitute Danny Cruz was able to settle a long pass in the area and set him up in open space, he wasted the opportunity with a poor shot right at Hartman.

Brian Mullan tested Hartman in stoppage time but the former Kansas City goalie made a diving save at the right post for his biggest stop of the match.

Both clubs play again Saturday, with FC Dallas hosting D.C. United and Houston visiting Chivas USA.

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.

Bet NFL Sports Lines

Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.

Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.

A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.

And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
